b-e-e, bee.

some reflection on today's spelling bee.

i planned it all out.  the microphone was in place.  the judges' waters were set on the table.  programs, check.  copy of rules for parents, check.  we began by briefing the kids and letting their nerves settle.  the bee began, then the tears started.  i didn't know what to do.  should i stop the bee?  no, that would cause more of a scene.  proceed.....phew, we made it through the practice round.  round 1, contestant 1...out.  contestant 2.  out. 3. out. fiddlesticks, should i have used the 3rd/4th grade spelling list instead of 5th/6th?  4. correct.  yes!!  .................

one left...championship word, "utensil."  yay!  we made it.  i was so proud of all the kids, but i wish they were moreso.  most of them have never been given the chance to actually fail, so hopefully this will turn out to be a good learning experience.

i know adults who remember the word they went out on in their elementary spelling bee....
lord, don't let it haunt them...

what was your word?

giraffe.

but the next year, and the year after that, i won every bee, except the state level one, where i got second place both years.

first year: temperate. (i spelled it temporate.)
second year: rapport ( i didn't know there was a t!)

i'll never miss those words again...
if i had one, i would have been one of those kids in DC on ESPN. sigh.

my word was "trumpet" and for some reason I spelled "trumper". I didn't even know what happened until I sat down!

Yes...it still haunts me.
